Rhode Island FC announced the signing of Logan Dorsey on loan from Minnesota United FC this afternoon.
The 23 year old striker most recently competed in the MLS Next Pro league with Minnesota United 2 after being selected in the MLS Super Draft by Minnesota. Previously, he graduated from University of Kentucky after being named United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division I Men’s All-Southeast Region Second Team. He will now have the opportunity to link up with fellow Wildcats JJ Williams and Clay Holstad.
This isn’t Dorsey’s first rodeo with the USL Championship. The striker impressively played with the Colorado Switchbacks from May 2019 – Jan 2021 (when he was 16 – 18 years old) making six appearances and scoring once.
What is RIFC getting with this loan?
The striker had solid production in his lone MLS Next Pro season, scoring 12 goals and 4 assists in 19 starts (22 appearances). Comparing his numbers to his peers in MLS Next Pro, Dorsey ranked in the 97th percentile in shots per 90 (4.26) and 97th percentile in shots on goal per 90 (2.2).
While I love a striker who isn’t afraid to get the ball on goal, he was also unselfish, creating over 1 chance per 90 with 0.33 big chances created per 90 (83rd percentile). While he had a slower middle part of the season, Dorsey turned up the heat after August, grabbing 11 of his 16 goal/assists in the final 12 matches.
Where will Dorsey fit in?
If you listened to the latest Tide Talk show episode (please like and subscribe), you will know that Matt and I were most concerned about the depth up top. With JJ Williams injury history and no clear backup in this role, it’s great to see the team bring in another out and out striker that could help change games and give JJ Williams a breather.
The obvious concern is our scars from the Jack P and Matthew Corcoran loans. This is an exciting addition to bolster the forward line, but there is always the looming threat of a loan recall at any point during the season. However, with this being our second loan from Minnesota United, the teams have shown a strong ability to work with each other in the past (I miss you Morris Duggan).
Welcome Logan!
