The time has finally come. RIFC are set to kickoff their 2026 season with a home game for the first time, as they will take on Sporting Jax at 4pm on Saturday. And quite frankly, it’s about damn time. For the third consecutive year, we’ve missed out on the USL’s opening weekend. The first two years due to scheduling and this year due to mother nature.
That’s not to say I personally haven’t enjoyed some time off. I recorded some abysmal stats (2 blogs published), while my fellow Tide Talk brethren picked up the slack. I can’t tell you how many times I sent this image in our group chat whenever any blogworthy news came up:

But alas, it’s finally time to get to it. Back to the routine of two blogs a week, while trying to make sure I don’t bore you all to death. I’m probably doing that already, taking up this much time for an intro. So without further ado, here is what to lookout for (see what I did there?) as we head into the weekend.

Last Time Out
This is where I’d normally discuss our previous game, but seeing as it’s the season opener, I’m just going to briefly touch on RIFC’s offseason. For the in depth coverage of the happenings these past few months, check out our Offseason Tracker. As for what I want to discuss here, it’s all about expectations.
I actually had a blog about 90% done on this entire subject, but the uncertainty of when the season was going to start (due to both weather and the CBA negotiations), caused me to hold off to the point where it just doesn’t make sense to publish anymore. Plus, Timmy had it covered anyway. So I’m going to try to sum it all up as succinctly as I can. A major challenge for me.
If I had to grade RIFC’s offseason, I’d give it an A-. The two biggest issues last season were a lack of goals and having no real natural fits to play down our right side. Both of those were addressed with new signings. Nick Scardina (RWB) and Pity Rodriguez (Attacking mid) are the two I’m most excited for. RIFC also retained the core of their defensive unit, which was one of the best in the league last season.
Therefore, I’m actually pretty high on the team heading into 2026. I think they’re going under the radar due to not having the shine of being a new team (2024) or opening a new stadium (2025). My hope and expectation is to finish in the top 4 of the Eastern Conference so we can finally get a home playoff game. Traveling is great and all, but playoffs at Tidewater would be electric.
Players to Watch
- Nick Scardina (RWB)
- Should provide an attacking threat down the right that this team hasn’t had since Stephen Turnbull in 2024. My preseason pick for best signing of the offseason
- Hugo Bacharach (CM)
- Hugo quickly became a Tide Talk favorite in 2025. Initially signed as a defender, he found himself in the midfield last season and wowed us with his defensive ability and his ball carrying. Can’t wait to see him out there again
- JJ Williams (FWD)
- With Albert Dikwa gone, a lot is going to fall on JJ’s broad shoulders. Sure, the additions of Logan Dorsey and Leo Afonso should help, but I’m crossing my fingers for a healthy and locked in JJ for 2026. Something we haven’t seen in his first two seasons in Pawtucket (mainly due to injuries)
Key to the Game
- Get the home crowd into it early
- After a largely disappointing 2025 season, RIFC need to get off to a strong start. They have every opportunity to do so against an expansion side in Sporting Jax. In RIFC’s first 5 games at Centreville Bank Stadium last year, they only scored 2 goals in what were 4 losses and 1 draw. I would love to forget all about that and enjoy a strong showing to kickoff 2026. Starting on the front foot and getting what will be a raucous crowd behind you into even more of a frenzy is key

Last Time Out
Sporting Jax are coming off a 3-0 home loss to Hartford Athletic in their inaugural game last Saturday. This was one of the games I watched live as part of the USL’s opening weekend and I have to say that the scoreline is kind of misleading. Sporting Jax looked decent at times and created some good chances. Their problems started when they conceded a scrappy goal just before halftime to go down 1-0. This allowed Hartford to sit back even more than they already were, conceding 73% of the possession in the 2nd half to Sporting Jax. Jax were unable to equalize despite some chances and would go on to concede two more goals in the last 15 minutes or so to fall 3-0.
Players to Watch
- Christian Olivares (GK)
- On loan from St. Louis City. Despite conceding 3 goals, saved a penalty and was his team’s highest rated player last weekend
- Zeke Soto (MF/FW)
- 19 year old attacker who spent time in the Houston Dynamo academy before going pro with Charleston Battery. Spent time on loan with Greenville Triumph last year. Passed the eye test as one of Sporting Jax’s most dangerous attacking threats last time out
- Emil Jååskelåinen (FW)
- Sporting Jax’s number 9. Son of former long time Premier League goalkeeper Jussi. Drafted 7th in the 2025 MLS Superdraft after a stellar senior season at Akron. Big goal scoring threat who I’m backing to be a very good striker in this league
Key to the Game
- Get the attacking three connected
- Despite conceding 3 last weekend, I think the focus needs to be on getting the attacking trio of Jååskelåinen, Soto, and Irish winger Kieran Sadlier on the same page. All three players showed their individual quality against Hartford but never fully clicked together. That is to be expected though with a team in their inaugural season. We certainly saw as much in 2024 with RIFC, where things didn’t fully click until a few months in. It’ll likely be a similar situation for Sporting Jax, but they’ll be hoping they can get their talented attackers going early in order to pick up some results while the team learns to gel
Analysis and Prediction
Given that there isn’t much to go on, it’s hard to give any kind of in depth analysis on how the game might go. Sporting Jax have played one game in their history and it’s a brand new season for RIFC. We aren’t sure how new players will be integrated and who will be in the starting 11. That being said, I think this will come down to who scores more goals. Groundbreaking analysis, I know. But in all seriousness, I think if RIFC’s defense from last season carries over, they should be able to keep Sporting Jax out. And I don’t think Sporting Jax has a particularly strong back line. Therefore…..

Final Thoughts
Year 3 of RIFC is upon us and I can’t wait for it to get started. This team and being part of Tide Talk have become such a huge part of my life over the past couple of years. I’m so hyped to be back in the blogging game and even more hyped that we get to go to Tidewater on Saturday. I’m sure I will have a sleepless Friday night. But this is what it’s all about. It’s why I love this sport so much. It brings out a level of passion that is unmatched. I’ll see you all on Saturday and as always, UP THE TIDE!
