Back Home, Cup Night, Rivalry Energy

We’re back home. We’re back under the lights. And it’s not just any match. It’s the Open Cup. And it’s Hartford.

After a frustrating trip down to Miami that didn’t deliver the result we wanted, this is exactly the kind of reset you ask for. Familiar stadium. Familiar opponent. A little extra bite in the air.

Let’s not forget how we got here. Rhode Island FC punched its ticket to 2nd round with a dominant 4-0 dismantling of CD Faialense. Professional. Ruthless. Exactly what you want to see against lower division competition. Now the level rises, the stakes rise, and the opponent? Yeah… it doesn’t get much better (or more annoying) than Hartford.

With a place in the Round of 32 and a matchup against MLS opposition on the line, this is as real as it gets this early in the season.

Where We Stand

League play has felt… familiar. A slow start, flashes of quality, but we’re still waiting for that full 90-minute performance where everything clicks. The attack has shown life, the chances are there, but consistency hasn’t quite followed yet.

That said, the Open Cup gave us a glimpse of what this squad can be.

Against CD Faialense, Rhode Island FC did not just win. They controlled everything. Three different players found the net for their first RIFC goals, showing the depth this roster has been building towards. Dani Rovira opened things up with a composed finish in his first start. CJ Williams followed with his first professional goal. Nick Scardina came off the bench and changed the match with a goal and by forcing an own goal just minutes later.

It was not just the scoreline. It was the dominance. 26 shots. A club record 12 on target. Constant pressure from start to finish, the kind of performance where the opponent never really gets a foothold.

Rhode Island has continued to generate chances at a high level, hitting 20 or more shots in three of its last four matches.

Now the question is simple. Can we keep the pressure up and finally turn those chances into goals?

Who We’re Facing

Familiar foe. Feels like we saw these knuckleheads every other week last season.

Like the Tide, Hartford comes into this match doing exactly what higher-level teams should do in the Open Cup: take care of business. A clean and efficient 2-0 win over FC Motown. Not flashy. Just effective.

The player to watch is Andrés Hernández.

He delivered a perfect corner that led to the opening goal. Then he buried a free kick that put the game out of reach. Two moments that defined the match.

Hartford has also been dangerous on the road to start the year, unbeaten away and outscoring opponents 8 to 1. Their keeper, Antony Siaha, has been busy as well, leading the league in saves and seeing more shots than almost anyone.

Hartford also showed something important. Depth. They rotated their squad and still controlled the game. No drop off. That matters in a tournament like this.

This will not be easy. It never is with Hartford. But man… it would feel really good to put a stamp on them.

Rhody Randoms

  • Big night for numbers people. First ever RIFC match on April 1. 401, baby
  • Sixth meeting between these two clubs. One win each. Three draws. Six goals each. About as even as it gets
  • Third time facing Hartford’s mixed squad. Players and clowns included
  • Hartford has not lost in the last three against us. Feels like a good time to fix that
  • Hartford has scored first in 4 of our 5 meetings. Time to flip that
  • Rhode Island loves late drama. Over a third of goals come after the 75th minute. Stick around

Vibe Check

This is where seasons start to take shape. League form is still coming together, but cup nights are different. One run can change everything, and this one comes with real stakes. A trip to the Round of 32 and an MLS opponent. The kind of night that can flip a season.

And let’s not forget the last time these two met at Tidewater. The tension, the chaos, there’s a feeling that this will never be settled.

Hartford is organized and tough to break down, but Rhode Island is home, the attack is waking up, and the moment is right there. This is not just about advancing. It is about flipping the script, protecting home turf, and sending a message.

Bring the energy. Bring the edge. Send Hartford home with nothing.
