It's another huge game as Rhode Island FC travel to Hamtramck to take on Detroit City FC at Keyworth. It'll be the sixth meeting between the two teams all-time and second this year after they played to a 0-0 draw earlier this season at Tidewater. For Detroit City, they'll be looking to remain 2nd in the Eastern Conference as well as keep their outside hope of finishing first alive. Meanwhile, RIFC are 6th in the East and are hoping to push for a home playoff game. As we head into this one, here's what to know about both teams:

## **Last Time Out**

RIFC took care of Brooklyn FC 3-1 last Saturday. First half goals from Amos Shapiro-Thompson and Karifa Yao had the team 2-0 up at halftime. Nick Scardina would make it 3 in the 55th minute before Brooklyn got a late consolation goal. It was a game that RIFC were expected to win and it was nice to see the team take care of business and put the game away early.

## **Players to Watch**

### **Karifa Yao (CB)**

- Karifa is a hugely important piece of RIFC's backline. After missing about 6 weeks starting in the middle of July, Karifa has returned to the lineup over the past month and has been gradually getting back to his best. His physical defending will be needed on Saturday

### **Hugo Bacharach (MF)**

- After missing a couple weeks, Hugo has played in the last three games and started the last two. Like Karifa, the team needs Hugo to get back to his best as we head towards the end of the season and the playoffs. I'm hoping for a big game from him on Saturday

### **Stas Korzeniowski (FW)**

- I used to say this team will go as far as JJ Williams will take them. I feel like Stas has the potential to be the same kind of player. He has 3 goals in his 7 appearances so far with his last coming 10 days ago against Indy Eleven. Getting him rolling is critical, especially this week against a tough Detroit defense

## **Storyline(s)**

### **Jojea and Busy Return + Are We Good?**

To be honest, there have been a handful of times where I've struggled to come up with one of these "Storylines". But this time I have two I can't choose between so we're getting both.

Firstly, Jojea Kwizera and Dwayne Atkinson finally return from international duty with Rwanda and Jamaica respectively. Busy is more of a bench option but I'm still excited to have him back. As for Jojea...well...the big question is where does he play? I can guarantee you that if he starts at LB in this one, this will be Tide Talk HQ:

He needs to be at RW in order to get the best out of him. I pray we do the right thing.

Now on to the "Are We Good?" part of this. RIFC have won two games in a row against Indy Eleven and Brooklyn FC and the vibes are high. But Indy may not even make the playoffs and Brooklyn are one of the worst teams in the league. This game in Detroit is going to be a *MAJOR* test. In order to feel confident about this team's chances of going on yet another playoff run, they'll need to have a big performance at Keyworth.

## **Last Time Out**

Detroit City beat Birmingham Legion 1-0 at home last weekend. A first half penalty for Kobe Hernandez-Foster was the lone goal. The result extended Detroit's unbeaten run to 4 games. In the bigger picture, they've only lost twice since the start of June. The two losses were a 1-0 at home against Las Vegas in July and a 1-0 away at Sacramento in September.

## **Players to Watch**

### **Callum Montgomery (CB)**

- Montgomery has led a defense that has conceded the fewest goals in the league this year. He signed with Detroit ahead of this season after having spent the last three years in the Canadian Premier League with Cavalry FC

### **Kobe Hernandez-Foster (MF)**

- I feel like I always mention Hernandez-Foster when RIFC play him, going back to when he was with Birmingham Legion. But he deserves it. He's a strong presence in central midfield and is second on the team in goal contributions with 7 (3 goals and 4 assists). His matchup against Hugo Bacharach could be a huge deciding factor in the game

### **Darren Smith (FW)**

- Smith had a solid year in 2025, his first in the USL Championship, when he scored 10 league goals and 13 in all competitions for Detroit. This year, he's taken a step up and has 13 goals in the league, good for third in the golden boot race. With a defense as good as Detroit have, it often only takes one moment to put the game away and that's what Smith will be hoping to do on Saturday

## **Storyline**

### **Big Improvement from 2025**

Detroit didn't have a bad season in 2025\. They finished 8th in the East and pulled off a huge upset at Lou City in the first round of the playoffs before falling to Pittsburgh on penalties in the second round. I'm sure 8th in the conference isn't where they wanted to be but they did prove to be a tough out when it mattered. This year, they've made a significant improvement. At least in the regular season so far. Detroit finished last season with the 7th best defense in terms of goals conceded but were 18th in goals scored. This year, they have the best defense in the league having only conceded 20 goals. The next closest teams are Tulsa and Sacramento with 25\. As for the attack, it's only improved slightly as they're currently 15th in goals scored. But when you're as hard to score against as Detroit have been, that doesn't really matter that much. As I mentioned at the top, they're in a great position to finish in the top 3 and have an outside shot at first.

## **Prediction**

### **Detroit City FC 1-1 Rhode Island FC**

As much as I'd love to pick an RIFC win, Detroit are just really good. I think they'll go ahead 1-0 from a set piece but Stas Korzeniowski will rescue a point and we'll all still have a good feeling about the team heading into the final 3 games.

---

I'll be back here right after the game with the Riptide Report to talk about my quick takeaways. We're really getting down to crunch time in the regular season and I have to admit the nerves are starting to set in. Like I said earlier, I need to see a strong performance here to have a good feeling about the playoffs. We haven't had anywhere near the consistent season I was hoping for heading into 2026 but the team does still have a chance to peak at the right time and give us a strong finish to the season before they head into the playoffs. Hopefully we learn something positive from Saturday night. UP THE TIDE!
