RIFC are back in action on Saturday with a match against league powerhouse Louisville City FC. RIFC will be travelling down to the bluegrass state for the 4pm kickoff, after playing their first two games of the year at home. It’s arguably the premier matchup in the USL Championship this weekend and I can’t wait to watch it unfold. But while we’re waiting, here’s a look at what to expect on Saturday:

Last Time Out
RIFC come into this one having drawn 1-1 in their league opener last weekend against Sporting Jax. There were a lot of encouraging signs for the amber and blue, namely the ability to create chances and take shots. However, the inability to put those chances away was the main reason they only came away with a point.
The team also took the field on Tuesday night for a meeting with CD Faialense in the first round of the US Open Cup. RIFC cruised to a straightforward 4-0 victory to advance to the second round. There were few significant takeaways from this one. The main one was that it was nice to see forward Jamin Gogo Peters and defender CJ Williams make their professional debuts, with Williams being my pick for the standout player. Outside of that, it was just good to see the team take care of business against inferior opposition.
Players to Watch
- Karifa Yao (CB)
- Karifa has picked up right where he left off after a stellar 2025 season. He is this team’s anchor at the back. A physical and imposing presence, Yao never shies away from a crunching challenge. He will need to be locked in against a dangerous Lou City team on Saturday
- Agustin “Pity” Rodriguez (MF)
- Pity had a strong start to his RIFC career, playing just over an hour in his debut. He also appeared on Tuesday night, playing about 25 minutes off the bench. His creativity and flair is what is going to drive this team forward. Pity will need to get on the ball often on Saturday and dictate play in the final third in order for RIFC to have success
- Leo Afonso (FW)
- Leo had a standout debut against Sporting Jax. He attempted 9 of RIFC’s 23 shots in that game. Aside from his propensity to let it rip, Leo also impressed with his movement playing alongside JJ Williams. They appear to be the classic two striker combo: one physical target man (JJ) and a technical finesse player (Leo). If last weekend was anything to go by, I expect big things. Leo will need to be on point against 2025’s top defensive team
Key to the Game
Use your physicality to stifle the opposition
RIFC have played at Lynn Family Stadium three times. The first two trips were a 5-2 regular season win and a 3-0 playoff win in 2024. In those two victories, RIFC were the more physical team. They imposed themselves on the game with 72 duels won in the first meeting and 70 in the second. That number went down to 52 in the 2-1 loss at Lynn Family last season.
This is obviously just one of many stats you could look at. But I think it’s a good indicator for success on Saturday. If they want to have any level of success, RIFC need to be physical and win their duels against a Lou City team that is going to want to dictate proceedings.

Last Time Out
Lou City handled their business with a 4-1 win over Miami FC last weekend. They were up 3-0 within the first half hour before conceding just before halftime. They would add a fourth goal midway through the second half as they cruised to victory. The takeaway here was simply that Lou City were dominant as expected, tallying 25 shots (8 on target) and 36 touches in the opposition box.
Louisville also had a midweek Open Cup match with theirs coming on Wednesday night against Southern Indiana FC. They made 8 changes from their game last weekend and came away with a comfortable 2-0 win. Much like RIFC’s Open Cup game, there really isn’t much to take away from it. The only thing of any significance is that new goalkeeper signing Hugo Fauroux made his Lou City debut after starting the season with an injury.
Players to Watch
- Aiden McFadden (RWB)
- McFadden is his team’s top scorer early on this season with a goal in each of Lou City’s two league games. He also scored twice against RIFC last season, with one in each meeting including the decisive goal in Lou City’s 1-0 win at Tidewater. His attacking runs down the right will likely pin RIFC’s LWB back and prevent them from getting forward
- Ray Serrano (MF)
- The 23 year old is Lou City’s best chance creator and produced a goal and an assist against Miami FC last weekend. He is also his team’s highest rated player this season according to Fotmob with an 8.6
- Chris Donovan (FW)
- Donovan was one of Lou City’s big signings of the offseason, coming over from Philadelphia Union. He made 21 appearances for the MLS side last season. Like Serrano, he also recorded a goal and an assist last weekend. With so much attacking depth in Louisville, he isn’t even guaranteed to start. But my feeling is he’ll make an impact either way
Key to the Game
Control possession and pin the opponent back
For Lou City to take all three points, they need to be on the front foot and keep persistent pressure on RIFC’s back line. In particular, they need to stretch the field by getting their wingbacks forward. This would inhibit RIFC from getting forward themselves in wide areas and potentially leave their talented attackers on an island
Analysis and Prediction
I promised in the last prematch blog that the analysis would get better. So here goes. I think this is going to be a fascinating watch. And as I hinted at in my key for each team, I expect Lou City to have the lion’s share of possession on Saturday. It’ll be really interesting to see how RIFC react. We’ve only seen the team twice this season, but in both games they were on the front foot. However, over the past two seasons we’ve seen RIFC sit back and defend for their lives at times, most famously in the shock 5-2 win over Lou City in 2024. I don’t expect Saturday to be as extreme but I’m intrigued to see how it all balances out.
There was also some major news this week that makes this one even harder to call. Danny Cruz has left his post as Lou City manager to join the staff at Minnesota United. The news came out of nowhere for fans but you’d imagine the team was prepared internally. Assistant coach Simon Bird has been elevated to interim head coach with former player and academy staff member Paolo DelPiccolo being made assistant coach. While I wouldn’t expect too many changes straight away, you have to think Bird will want to put his own stamp on the team.
With all of this being said, I expect an exciting game between two very talented teams. I can see both sides getting goals and in the end, this is what I’m going with:

Final Thoughts
Defiance 1636 will be at The Guild for this one for the first away watch party of the season. If you want the closest thing to being in 116 for the game, it’s the place to be. As always, I will be back here with the Riptide Report following Saturday’s game and we will also have player ratings and a postmatch pod on Sunday. Be sure to check out the defiance discord and/or find us on social media the keep up to date with all of our content. Until next time, UP THE TIDE!
