Star Wars Night in Pawtucket: RIFC Hosts Birmingham Legion FC
A cold, rainy night in Hartford. A scoreless draw that honestly had no business going to penalties. And then Koke Vegas, being Koke Vegas, making the save that mattered most before Karifa Yao stepped up and buried it. That’s kind of the Rhode Island FC story right now: a club that keeps finding a way. The Tide came away from Trinity Health Stadium with an extra point in the Prinx Tires USL Cup, adding yet another chapter to an increasingly compelling 2026 run of form. The vibe feels different. This team is clicking.
Now the Tide gets to come home. And not just for any home game. Saturday night at Centreville Bank Stadium is Star Wars Night, the first in club history, and Rhode Island FC will be looking to do what it hasn’t done since October 2024: win three league games in a row. Everything is trending in the right direction. The attack is cooking, the backline has gone quiet in all the best ways, and the fanbase is locked in. Time to kick it into hyperspeed and put on a show.
Where We Stand
Six matches in, the Tide sit 9th in the East, right on the playoff bubble, with eight points from a 2W-2D-2L start. That record still has the asterisk of a rough opening month, going 0-2-2 through the first four games, but what’s happened since is what matters. Back-to-back league wins, a dramatic shootout victory in Hartford, and seven goals across the last two Championship matches. Call it what you want, the points are piling up. The momentum pendulum has swung hard, and it’s swinging RIFC’s way.
The attack has fully come alive. JJ Williams leads the club with four goals across all competitions and is picking up steam. Jojea Kwizera has already matched his career-high goal total for the club just six games into the regular season. And the defense has matched them step for step. Grant Stoneman barely puts a foot wrong. Karifa Yao beyond being a clearance machine is also now ice cold from the spot. And Koke Vegas is playing some of the best soccer of his career in goal, sitting just 11 minutes shy of 10,000 career regular-season minutes in the Championship. Rhode Island FC isn’t searching for itself anymore. It’s found it.
Who We’re Facing
Birmingham Legion FC come in 11th in the East with six points from a 1W-3D-2L record. Still, it’s the USL, you can’t sleep on anyone. The Legion have quietly put together a four-game unbeaten run across all competitions and are trending upward. They picked up their first win of the season in genuinely impressive fashion, shutting out defending USL Championship title-holders Pittsburgh Riverhounds at home on April 12. They followed that up with a 2-2 draw against Indy, then held San Antonio scoreless before falling on penalties in their USL Cup opener. They’re gaining confidence.
The main threat is Tyler Pasher, who has been an absolute nuisance lately. Pasher already has three goals in his last three games, surpassing his entire 2025 scoring total in just six matches. He also leads the team with 12 chances created, so if he has a good night, Birmingham can be dangerous. That said, the Legion come to Pawtucket carrying some unwanted history. They are winless in all five previous meetings with RIFC (0W-4L-1T). Saturday gives them the chance to rewrite that, but they’ll have to do it against a club playing its best soccer of the season.

- Tide Chart – Andrew Quadros’ April breakdown is out and it is a good one. Who is rising, who is falling, and why Jojea Kwizera going from 1 goal in all of 2025 to already surpassing that total in six games this season is the story of the month.
- Under the Surface – Tyler Hatch’s April breakdown is also live and it is packed. Did you know Grant Stoneman increased his defensive actions per 90 by 230% after moving into a rotation role? Neither did we.
Vibe Check
First ever Star Wars Night, lightsabers for the first 2,000 through the gate, a team that has completely flipped the script on its early season struggles to looking genuinely dangerous. This is exactly the kind of home match you circle. Birmingham has never beaten us in Rhode Island, and this is the hottest we have looked all season. Han shot first and so will the Tide. The Force is strong with this club right now, and Centreville Bank Stadium on a Saturday night under the lights should be electric.
