Time to Storm Fort Fitzy
Last weekend felt important. Not because Rhode Island FC beat Tampa Bay. They did not. But because of the way they responded. Down 1-0 against the best team in the USL Championship, against a defense that had barely conceded all season, the Tide kept pushing and eventually found their moment through, who else, JJ Williams. The late equalizer salvaged a point, extended the club’s strong run against the Rowdies, and honestly just felt like another sign that this group is starting to round into form again.
Now attention shifts north for Rhode Island FC’s first-ever trip to Portland’s Fitzpatrick Stadium as the Prinx Tires USL Cup group stage rolls on. Cup matches always bring a slightly different energy. Weird lineups, rotation questions, penalty shootout chaos lurking if things finish level after 90. With only one wild card spot available across the entire tournament, every point matters way more than you think this early. But beyond the standings, this one just feels fun. Another New England soccer club, another fanbase that actually cares, another regional rivalry still finding its feet. Fort Fitzy’s been breached.
Where We Stand
Eight league matches in, the Tide sit 10th in the East with nine points from a 2W-3D-3L start. That still feels a little underwhelming on paper, but the actual trajectory is much more encouraging than the raw standings suggest. Rhode Island is unbeaten in three of their last four across all competitions, JJ Williams has scored in three straight league matches and sits on five goals across all competitions, and Nick Scardina delivered a huge spark off the bench last weekend with the first assist of his USL Championship career.
Defensively, this team is quietly stabilising too. RIFC just became only the third team this season to take points off Tampa Bay and have now gone four straight against the Rowdies without a loss. For the first time since July 2025, they came back from a deficit to earn something. That resilience had been missing and now comes the fun part, seeing if they can carry it into cup play after last year’s semifinal run.
Who We’re Facing
Portland Hearts of Pine come into this one in the middle of a strange start to 2026. Sitting at 2W-2L-6D through ten matches, they are still searching for consistency, especially at the back, but context matters. Portland spent much of the opening stretch on the road, has been solid at home, and Saturday kicks off a three-game homestand for a club that desperately needs to start turning draws into wins. Honestly, they are probably better than their record suggests.
The problem has been game management. Portland have conceded eight second-half goals and dropped four points from winning positions, both among the worst totals in League One. They have been good enough to lead, just not good enough to close. There is real attacking talent here though, with Ollie Wright on four goals already and players like Walter Varela, Lagos Kunga, and Emiliano Terzaghi capable of making games uncomfortable if given space. Rhode Island hold a perfect 2W-0D-0L record against Portland including last year’s 4-1 cup win in Pawtucket, but Fort Fitzy should be lively and cup matches tend to get weird fast.
Rhody Randoms
- Rhode Island FC reached the USL Cup semifinals last season, finishing with 12 goals in six matches.
- RIFC has outscored Portland 6-2 across the two all-time meetings between the clubs.
- Portland Hearts of Pine have conceded eight second-half goals this season, tied for the second-most in USL League One.
- If a USL Cup match finishes tied after 90 minutes, it immediately goes to penalties, with the shootout winner earning an extra point in the standings.
- Rhode Island opened this year’s cup campaign by beating Hartford in a penalty shootout after a scoreless draw.
- Portland lost its USL Cup opener to Westchester SC on penalties after conceding a late equalizer.
Vibe Check
This feels like one of those sneaky-dangerous cup matches. Short road trip, weird kickoff time, old-school stadium, and a League One side that is probably better than its record and absolutely desperate for a statement result. These are usually the ingredients for chaos in competitions like this. But honestly, these are also the kinds of games that made last year’s run so fun. The road environments, the penalty shootout stress, the weird little rivalries that somehow started feeling real almost immediately. Portland feels like the next chapter in that.
And this growing New England lower division soccer scene is becoming one of the coolest things happening in American soccer right now. Rhode Island, H*******, Portland, and Vermont. Supporters traveling, clubs building identities, regional matches that already have genuine edge to them. So what are we thinking? Rotation squad or full-strength push? Does JJ stay hot? Are we emotionally prepared for another cup penalty shootout? Drop your predictions below. Let’s ride the Tide north, storm Fort Fitzy, and keep this cup run rolling.
