Back Home, Back Hunting Points

Rhode Island FC returns to Centreville Bank Stadium Saturday night, trying to regroup after a brutal USL Cup loss in Maine and refocus on league play against Brooklyn FC.

Last weekend’s 2-1 defeat to Portland Hearts of Pine was, frankly, a miserable night for Rhode Island. In a match that already carried extra emotion thanks to the growing New England rivalry and a strong traveling contingent of RIFC supporters who made the trip north, the club came out completely out of sync and paid for it almost immediately. Portland jumped ahead early, added a second before the half-hour mark, and Rhode Island spent the rest of the night trying to dig itself out of a hole it created with one of its sloppiest starts of the season.

There were stretches later in the match where RIFC finally looked more like itself. The attack generated pressure, Logan Dorsey pulled one back early in the second half, and the club finished with an overwhelming edge in shots, corners, and possession in the attacking third. But those flashes of urgency only made the opening stretch sting more. Rhode Island chased the game for over an hour and, despite the late push, never truly recovered from how poor the opening 30 minutes looked.

Now attention flips back to league play and a first-ever meeting with expansion side and likely future heated rival Brooklyn FC under the lights in Pawtucket. National TV. World Soccer Night. Two clubs meeting for the first time ever. Maybe this is the start of a whole new New England vs. New York soccer rivalry chapter.

Where We Stand

Eight matches into the season, Rhode Island sits 10th in the Eastern Conference with nine points from a 2W-3D-3L start, just below the playoff line and in a table tight enough that a single good week can completely shift the outlook. The Tide enter Saturday unbeaten in four of their last five league matches (2W-2D-1L), but it still feels like this group is searching for the version of itself that can consistently put complete performances together.

That’s kind of been the story lately. There have been stretches where Rhode Island looks like one of the more dangerous attacking teams in the conference. The 4-0 dismantling of Charleston. Taking points off league-leading Tampa Bay. The avalanche of chances created against Portland despite the ugly result. But there have also been lapses, slow starts, and missed opportunities that have kept the club from fully climbing the standings.

The encouraging part is that the underlying numbers continue trending in the right direction. Rhode Island generated 18 shots, 25 crosses, and 10 corners against Portland last weekend, continuing a trend of creating a ton of attacking pressure even if the finishing touch hasn’t always followed. JJ Williams continues to lead the attack with five goals across all competitions, while Logan Dorsey is coming off one of his more active performances of the year after scoring in Maine.

The sense around this team right now is less panic and more frustration that there’s probably a higher ceiling here than the standings currently show. Saturday feels like one of those opportunities to reset the mood a little heading into the summer stretch.

Who We’re Facing

They come into Pawtucket sitting 12th in the Eastern Conference with seven points from a 2W-1D-6L start and are currently winless in their last four matches across all competitions. Brooklyn has struggled to find consistency during its inaugural USL Championship campaign, particularly away from home, where they’re still searching for their first result of the season.

The biggest issue has been goals. Brooklyn hasn’t scored in nearly 200 minutes and was shut out again midweek in a 2-0 USL Cup loss to Hartford Athletic. That said, the scoreline probably flattered Hartford a little. Brooklyn actually outshot Hartford 15-4 and forced several big saves, so there are signs this team may be a little more dangerous than recent results suggest.

There’s also a pretty notable Rhode Island connection running through this roster. Saturday marks the return of former RIFC players Jackson Lee, Gabriel Alves, and Taimu Okiyoshi to Centreville Bank Stadium. Lee especially feels likely to get a warm reception after spending the first two years of his professional career in Rhode Island.

And while Brooklyn has struggled overall, there’s still legitimate attacking talent here. Markus Anderson leads the club with four goals, while Juan Carlos Obregón Jr. arrived after winning the 2025 USL League One Golden Boot with 17 goals last season. If Rhode Island gets careless defensively, Brooklyn still has enough quality to punish them.

Rhody Randoms

  • Saturday marks the first-ever meeting between Rhode Island FC and Brooklyn FC in any competition.
  • Brooklyn is still searching for its first road result of the season (0W-3L-0D away).
  • Former Tide players Jackson Lee, Gabriel Alves, and Taimu Okiyoshi all return to Pawtucket as opponents for the first time.
  • Rhode Island is unbeaten all-time against New York-based clubs after last season’s 4-1 win over Westchester SC.

Vibe Check

This feels like a really important “keep the pressure on” kind of match. The Eastern Conference table is crowded, the atmosphere at Centreville Bank Stadium has been building every week, and this Rhode Island team still feels like one that’s close to putting everything together. The attack is generating chances, the identity is starting to sharpen, and now it’s about turning good stretches into complete performances. Add in a first-ever meeting with Brooklyn, national TV, and a Saturday night crowd in Pawtucket, and this one suddenly has a little extra juice to it. Curious how everyone’s feeling heading into this one. Who gets on the scoresheet? Do we finally get the full 90-minute breakout attacking performance? Let’s ride the Tide and make Centreville Bank Stadium loud tonight.
