A Chance to Reset the Narrative
Last weekend’s trip to Indianapolis ended in frustration, but not necessarily disappointment. Rhode Island FC fell 1-0 to Indy Eleven despite controlling long stretches of the match, outshooting the hosts 20-7 and piling up 33 touches inside the Indy penalty area. Unfortunately, once again, Eric Dick proved to be Rhode Island’s kryptonite. The Indy goalkeeper recorded six saves and improved an almost absurd record against the Tide, who have managed just a single goal against him across six meetings.
The result snapped some positive momentum, but it didn’t feel like a performance that warrants panic. If anything, it reinforced a theme we’ve seen throughout 2026: this team is capable of creating chances against anyone. The next step is simply being more clinical in front of goal. With league play taking a brief pause, Rhode Island now shifts its focus back to the Prinx Tires USL Cup, where a visit from Westchester SC presents an opportunity to get back in the win column and keep its knockout-round hopes alive.
Where We Stand
Ten league matches into the season, the Tide sit 9th in the Eastern Conference with 12 points from a 3W-3D-4L record, just one spot below the playoff line. It’s been a season of peaks and valleys so far, with Rhode Island looking capable of beating anyone on its day but still searching for the consistency that fueled last year’s playoff run. The recent 4-1 win over Brooklyn showed just how dangerous this team can be when everything clicks, but losses to Portland and Indy have cooled some of that momentum.
Despite the mixed results, the underlying numbers remain encouraging. JJ Williams leads the USL Championship with 38 shots, while Leo Afonso ranks second with 34, and Rhode Island continues to create chances at one of the highest rates in the league. In the USL Cup, the Tide sit on two points through two matches, but with only two points separating first from sixth in Group 5, Saturday’s result could dramatically reshape the standings heading into the final group-stage match.
Who We’re Facing
Westchester SC comes into Pawtucket sitting 16th in USL League One with seven points from a 2W-1D-6L record and having lost four straight matches across all competitions. It’s been a difficult start for a club still trying to find its footing, particularly away from home, where it remains winless this season and has scored just two goals while conceding 11.
The visitors do have a few players worth watching, led by former Rhode Island midfielder Conor McGlynn, who captains the side and leads the club with five goals in all competitions. Jonathan Jimenez has also contributed in attack, while goalkeeper Luca Marinelli has kept several matches close despite the results. Saturday marks Westchester’s first-ever trip to Centreville Bank Stadium and, barring a surprise postseason meeting, likely the only matchup between these clubs this season, with Rhode Island looking to build on last year’s 4-1 victory in New York.
Rhody Randoms
- Rhode Island FC has never lost to Westchester SC, winning the club’s only previous meeting 4-1 in New York during the 2025 USL Cup.
- Nick Scardina’s rise has been one of the quieter success stories of 2026. Tyler Hatch noted in his latest Under the Surface column that Scardina picked up his first two assists for the club in May and now looks firmly entrenched as Rhode Island’s starting right back. If you haven’t checked out Tyler’s monthly statistical deep dive yet, it’s well worth a read.
A Hands On The Pulse
One of the biggest storylines Matt Hands highlighted this week is Rhode Island’s international absences, with both Jojea Kwizera (Rwanda) and Dwayne “Busy” Atkinson (Jamaica) away on national team duty. Their departures could create opportunities for players like Noah Fuson, Logan Dorsey, and Agustín “Pity” Rodríguez to take on larger roles in a match that feels tailor-made for squad rotation. Vibe Check
This feels like the perfect opportunity for Rhode Island FC to hit reset. The Indy result was frustrating, but the performance itself was far from poor, and now the Tide return home for a matchup that presents a real opportunity to build momentum heading into a busy summer stretch. With Kids Night, fireworks, and a chance to keep their USL Cup hopes alive, Centreville Bank Stadium should have plenty of energy on Saturday night. What are you expecting from this one? More squad rotation? A breakout night from Fuson? Another JJ goal? Drop your thoughts below. Let’s ride the Tide and keep the USL Cup dream alive.
