Investigation Reveals Kawhi Leonard as Investor in RIFC
Blog

Rhode Island FC are in the news. Last night a story broke about NBA Superstar Kawhi Leonard being a surprise investor in RIFC. The reporting was a collaborative effort between our local CBS affiliate WPRI and investigative sports podcast Pablo Torre Finds Out (PTFO). Here at Tide Talk, we normally try to focus on the on the field aspect of the team. It's a lot more fun for us to discuss performances and results than it is to get into the weeds on anything related to ownership or the stadium/housing project. But because of the popularity of PTFO and Kawhi Leonard being a huge name, the story has gone somewhat national. So we feel an obligation to at least talk about it.

I'm going to say something here that will maybe get you to click off this blog. I'm not here to break any news or provide any additional information on the situation. This is simply going to be in line with what we always do here at Tide Talk: giving a fan perspective on everything related to RIFC.

The Clippers, Aspiration, and Kawhi

In order to understand why this Kawhi Leonard investment has become a big story, we need to go back a few years to something completely unrelated to RIFC. And that is Kawhi's dealings with the Los Angeles Clippers and financial company Aspiration. Kawhi re-signed with the Clippers in August of 2021 with a $176 million contract over four years. Clippers owner Steve Ballmer invested $50 million in Aspiration and the team signed a $300 million deal with the company in September 2021. And then in April 2022, Kawhi signed a $28 million endorsement deal with Aspiration. So what's the story here?

Well, there was a big investigation done by Pablo Torre that was released on PTFO in September 2025. The gist of it is that Steve Ballmer allegedly used Kawhi's Aspiration endorsement deal as a way to funnel money to the superstar and circumvent the NBA's salary cap. The deal was allegedly a "no-show" endorsement, meaning Kawhi didn't need to do anything to get the money. He never promoted Aspiration in any way. This all came to light because in March 2025, Aspiration filed for bankruptcy and co-founder Joe Sanberg was arrested and charged with fraud (which he would later plead guilty to). The accusation here is that Ballmer knew about the fraud going on with Aspiration, something he has unequivocally denied. The NBA is currently investigating the ordeal to see if there was any wrongdoing.

Where does RIFC fit in?

Kawhi Leonard's involvement with RIFC is something I didn't have on my bingo card. As for how this all came to be, the timeline of when he invested in the project was a big part of the reporting. Per PTFO, Kawhi founded two LLCs to invest in RIFC on January 2, 2024. Just 8 days later, it was announced that he had re-signed with the Clippers again. The podcast went on to talk about how Kawhi's investment wasn't made public, the issues with the funding of the Tidewater development project, and the fact that Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee went to a Clippers game last October where he met with RIFC owner Brett Johnson. I would say that all of this is interesting information. But the inferences that are being made are the real story here.

Online Reaction

The reaction to this news is coming from two sides: the general sports fan interested in the NBA investigation and people interested in RI politics and RIFC. From the general sports fan side of things, I've seen a lot of assumptions that this investment in RIFC from Kawhi is just another way for Ballmer and the Clippers to circumvent the salary cap. The closeness of the timing of the investment and Kawhi re-signing with the Clippers seems suspicious to some because the Aspiration endorsement also happened around the same time as a new contract was signed.

On the Rhode Island side of things, there seems to be an implication that RIFC was involved in some sort of wrongdoing here surrounding the funding of the stadium. Not announcing Kawhi Leonard as an investor is being viewed as odd, especially as former Boston Celtic Daniel Theis was publicly named as an investor and has been seen at the stadium. Also, former NFL player Marshawn Lynch and NBA player Russell Westbrook are two examples of high profile athletes who have been announced as investors in USL teams. This, along with the well documented process of securing the funding for the Tidewater project, are reasons being used to assume that something fishy is going on here.

My Opinion

When I first read the article from WPRI and finished listening to the PTFO episode, I was honestly pretty pissed off. There was little to no evidence in the podcast that there was any wrongdoing. Assumptions were being made that because of the Aspiration story, there must be something going on with this investment. But in reality, we don't actually know anything as of yet.

There's also incentive for PTFO and WPRI to cover this in a negative light. Pablo Torre won the 2026 Pulitzer Prize for Audio Reporting on the back of his 2025 investigation. As a fellow award-winning podcast/content group here at Tide Talk, we understand how it feels. But making a big deal out of a follow-up story when there's very little concrete information to prove anything untoward seems a little much.

As for WPRI, let's be real here: their main audience is an aging group of people who still watch/listen to local news. Most of us now get all of our information in real time online. But that demographic who still consumes local news is the very same one that has been trashing the Tidewater project from day 1. They're mostly people who don't understand that soccer is a growing sport in this country and they want to just be mad about anything to do with public funding. So it behooves WPRI to try to make a big deal about something that at least at this moment is really just a minor story.

My biggest gripe with this entire situation is it underscores the trend of sensationalizing stories in order to get clicks. We all know we're in an age where that's just how the world works. But the facts should actually matter. And at this point, I don't see enough facts to suggest there's anything to this story. Unfortunately, most people will just end up seeing what they want to see.

All of this being said, this is still a developing story. So there may be more information to come. In fact, WPRI has teased a report coming tonight about the identity of a mystery investor in RIFC referred to as "Mr. Big". This investor personally guaranteed the completion of the stadium in October 2023 but was never publicly named. The potential bombshell of it being Steve Ballmer himself would be big news but we'll have to wait and see what the reporting is. It may end up having nothing to do with this Kawhi Leonard situation at all. If any actual bombshells do end up coming out of this story though, we will be here to further share our thoughts.
