Pre-Match Essentials | Rhode Island FC vs Hartford Athletic | Sat Jul 18, 2026 | 7:30 PM ET

Derby Day!
Well...that was fun. It's probably going to be a while before any of us forget Koke Vegas calmly stepping up and burying the winning penalty against Brooklyn last weekend. Goalkeepers aren't supposed to do that, yet somehow it felt perfectly on-brand for a player who's quietly built a highlight reel full of unforgettable moments in an RIFC shirt. The Cup may not have ended the way we all hoped, but closing it out with that moment was about as good a sendoff as we could've asked for.
Now it's time to turn the page, because our neighboring knuckleheads are in town.
The Cup is behind us. The league table is back in focus. Tonight is Rhode Island FC's 100th competitive match, and the Tide's biggest rivalry gets another chapter under the lights at Centreville Bank Stadium. Three points are on the line, bragging rights are always at stake, and if this team is going to make a climb up the Eastern Conference table, there may not be a better place to start than by beating Hartford.
Where We Stand
Rhode Island enters Derby Day 9th in the Eastern Conference with 16 points (4W-4D-5L). Hartford sits one spot ahead in 8th with 19 points (4W-7D-3L), but they've also played one more match. That's about as close as it gets this time of year. One result can completely change the way the table looks, and suddenly tonight feels like a whole lot more than "just another regular season game."
The first half of the season has been a little bit of everything. Big performances, frustrating draws, memorable moments, and a few missed opportunities along the way. But if Rhode Island is going to make a serious push toward the playoffs, these are the nights that matter. A packed house. A rivalry game. Three points sitting right there. Beat Hartford, and suddenly the second half of the season starts feeling a whole lot different.
Know Your Enemy
Hartford Athletic comes into Pawtucket sitting 8th in the East with 19 points (4W-7D-3L), and if you've watched them over the last couple of seasons, you already know exactly who they are. They've scored the fewest goals in the USL Championship (12), but they've also conceded just 13, making them one of the stingiest defensive teams in the league. They're organized, physical, and perfectly happy dragging every match into a ninety-minute rock fight while they wait for one mistake.
That defensive identity starts with Antony Siaha. The veteran goalkeeper leads the Championship with seven clean sheets and has been outstanding all season. He's also the Hartford Derby's Certified Clown after last year's obscene gestures toward the Rhode Island supporters and his over-the-top postgame theatrics. Very good shotblocker? Sure. But if he's expecting anything other than ninety minutes of relentless boos from Centreville, he's even more delusional than we thought. Behind him, Barry Coffey has suddenly found his scoring touch with three goals in his last two matches, giving Hartford a bit more bite going forward. If Rhode Island can solve Siaha and keep Coffey quiet, they'll put themselves in a great position to finally close the gap in the standings.
Hands on the Pulse
Matt Hands asked the question that's been bouncing around my head all week: Can this derby be the launching point? If you haven't checked out his excellent Prematch Lookout, it's well worth the read before kickoff. The Prematch Lookout
The Cup is over. The schedule starts getting tougher from here, and eventually this team has to turn encouraging performances into a sustained run of results. A rivalry match at home, in your 100th competitive game, feels like exactly the kind of night that can build momentum. The crowd will be ready. The players should be too.
Matt is calling for a 1-0 Rhode Island win, and I'd take that without thinking twice. Derby matches aren't usually pretty, and Hartford's a thorn that doesn't make them easy. Find one goal. Defend like hell. Send the Green and Blue west on Route 6, licking their wounds.
Rhody Randoms
- Century Club. Tonight marks Rhode Island FC's 100th competitive match, a pretty remarkable milestone for a club that feels like it was just getting started yesterday.
- Koke Being Koke. Vegas became the first goalkeeper in club history to score a penalty kick when he buried last week's shootout winner against Brooklyn. We're still smiling about it.
- Derby Villain Watch. Antony Siaha returns to Centreville Bank Stadium. Expect great saves, relentless boos, and at least one unnecessary attempt to make himself the center of attention.
Vibe Check
Forget the form. Forget the table. Forget everything that happened before today. Derby matches have a different pulse. Every tackle feels a little harder, every save gets a bigger reaction, and every goal somehow means just a little bit more. Add in Rhode Island FC's 100th match, a Saturday night crowd, and a chance to make up ground in the standings, and you've got everything you could want from a summer night in Pawtucket.
If you've been waiting to bring someone to their first Rhode Island FC match, tonight's the night. If you're in Defiance, make Hartford earn every touch. And if the Hartford Clown decides to put on another Broadway production, feel free to remind him exactly where he is.
Three points. Bragging rights. Beat Hartford. #UpTheTide
