Rhode Island FC Announce Re-Signing of Three Players

Rhode Island FC announced a trio of re-signings today. Goalkeeper Koke Vegas, midfielder Amos Shapiro-Thompson, and defender/midfielder Hugo Bacharach are the players who received new deals. The wording of the announcement from the club was that the three players were re-signed for "2027 and beyond". So while the length of the deals was not announced, we at least know that they're under contract for next season.

Analysis

These moves are a positive for a multitude of reasons. First, it's good to get business done early. You don't want to be waiting until the offseason to figure out who is returning for next year. And second, all three players are deserving of new contracts.

Koke Vegas is the captain and leader of this team. And despite his numbers taking a small dip this year, it's still a no-brainer to bring him back. Especially when it's pretty clear that there's no other goalkeeper under contract that the team has faith in. Jacob Castro and Will Meyer have a grand total of zero minutes in their RIFC careers.

Amos Shapiro-Thompson has been a fan-favorite since he first stepped onto the field. And for good reason. He has a relentless motor and he runs himself into the ground every game. After the Clay Holstad departure to FC Dallas, Amos is taking over the mantle of all-energy midfielder and double pivot partner for Hugo Bacharach.

Speaking of Hugo, I would argue he's the most likely player on RIFC's roster to make a move up to MLS after Clay. He already has experience in MLS after getting picked in the first round of the 2024 MLS Superdraft by Minnesota United. Hugo was drafted as a defender but his move to the midfield at RIFC has been a revelation. Tying him up through at least next season should help the club get some compensation for him if and when he moves on. Here's hoping he stays in Rhode Island for his whole career though.

It's nice to see the team showing some transparency. The recent injury update on Zachary Herivaux and Jamin Gogo Peters combined with this contract announcement is a great way to keep the fans informed. I also can't help but think that this being released today is strategic from the club. The good news helps soften the blow of losing Clay. But regardless of the timing, the club deserves kudos for keeping us all updated. Long may it continue.
