With only 3 games left in the regular season, we have another huge game for Rhode Island FC. We're set to host Loudoun United on Wednesday night in a game where RIFC have the chance to clinch a playoff berth. A win would get it done. For Loudoun, they're out of playoff contention and are just looking to play spoiler at this point. The teams have already played once this year, back in June. RIFC took that one in convincing fashion 4-1. As for Wednesday night, here's what you need to know:

Last Time Out

This past Saturday, RIFC fell 1-0 at Detroit City. A second half goal from Darren Smith was the difference. Heading into the game, I think we all knew it would be tough and probably would have been satisfied with a draw. But given that Detroit went a man down about a quarter of the way through the game, the result and performance were extremely frustrating. RIFC got worse when playing a man up and adjustments came way too late. A big turnaround is needed on Wednesday.

Players to Watch

Koke Vegas (GK)

  • At times like these, I have to talk about Koke. He is the captain and leader of this team. A lot rests on his shoulders and he'll need to get his teammates in the right mindset to bounce back from the weekend

Hugo Bacharach (MF)

  • I highlighted Hugo in the last Prematch Lookout, but it turned out that was pointless as he missed the game in Detroit through suspension for yellow card accumulation. So I'll say it again. Hugo is a massive part of this team. His presence in midfield is crucial to the team's success and he was sorely missed last weekend. His return should help the team get more control in midfield

Osman Foyo (FW)

  • Foyo has 1 assist in 9 appearances for RIFC so far. To me, that isn't enough to justify the minutes he's been getting on the right wing as of late. Don't get me wrong, I think he can be a really good player for us but at this point in the season, I'd rather we relied on a more established player. If he continues to get the playing time, I want to see more from him

All to Play For

Despite the poor performance and result at Detroit, RIFC still have everything to play for. Well, at least as far as my goal for the team this season: a home playoff game. A win here along with a Hartford draw or loss at home against Charleston (also Wednesday night) would put RIFC 5th in the conference and level on points with the Pittsburgh Riverhounds. RIFC and Pittsburgh play at Tidewater on Saturday. So there's still a chance. The problem is the team has to go out and do it. It's now or never.

Last Time Out

Loudoun United took down arguably the hottest team in the league when they beat Miami FC 2-0 on Saturday. Miami was in a 6 game unbeaten run that included 4 straight wins. A brace from Eddy Davis III gave Loudoun the win (more on him soon). The result extends Loudoun's unbeaten run to 3 games, though the previous two games were a 4-1 win over Sporting Jax and a 1-1 draw with Indy Eleven. Both of those teams are currently out of the playoffs.

Players to Watch

Ethan Bandre (GK)

  • It's been an interesting season at GK for Loudoun. They started the season with Adam Beaudry in goal but he was recalled by the Colorado Rapids back in May. They then turned to Ethan Bandre for a few months but brought in Jordan Farr on loan from DC United in early September. Farr was recently recalled and made his last appearance on October 3rd, when he memorably scored an equalizer deep into stoppage time against Indy Eleven. So now it's back to Bandre. He returned to the starting 11 this past weekend and had a very good game against Miami. He'll need to be on top of his game again on Wednesday

Abdellatif Aboukoura (FW)

  • I was a huge fan of Aboukoura in 2025 and correctly predicted his breakout season (have to pat myself on the back on the rare occasions when I get something right). He hasn't had nearly as good of a 2026 but he did miss the first few months of the season. He comes into this one with 5 goals and 1 assist in 18 appearances in the league. He's still a huge threat out wide and RIFC will need to pay close attention to him

Eddy Davis III (FW)

  • Thor Ulfarsson was the team's leading goalscorer (8) before he was transferred to his native Iceland in August. Davis was loaned in from the Philadelphia Union shortly after. Sound familiar? RIFC also transferred their top goalscorer (JJ Williams) to Europe and loaned in a Philadelphia Union striker (Stas Korzeniowski) in August, just a few weeks after Loudoun. Davis has been more successful though as he had 8 goals in just 10 games. Slowing him down is going to be crucial

Finish Strong

It's been a tough year for Loudoun. They underwent an ownership change during the 2025 season and were hoping for a reset this year. But they were missing key players early this season like Aboukoura and on more than one occasion weren't able to name a full 18 for a Matchday squad. They now find themselves as the best of the four eliminated teams in the Eastern Conference. It isn't a great place to be but it of course could be much worse. They'll be hoping to finish strong and ruin RIFC's shot at a home playoff game along the way.

Prediction

Rhode Island FC 2-1 Loudoun United

I believe I said 2-0 on Sunday night's podcast but I'm changing to a 2-1. I think Eddy Davis is on fire and we might struggle to keep him out. But being at home should spur RIFC on to victory and help setup a massive game on Saturday.

I'll be back here right after the game with the Riptide Report to go over my immediate takeaways. Until then, UP THE TIDE!
