The Prematch Lookout: Rhode Island FC vs Louisville City FC - 9/5/2026

Rhode Island FC host Louisville City FC Saturday night at Centreville Bank Stadium. It'll be the 7th time the two teams meet after two regular season contests in each of the last two years, a playoff game in 2024, and a game earlier this season. That early season game was all the way back on March 21st. Louisville came away 4-2 winners, with goals in the 76th and 90+2' being the difference. Both teams will look different this time around, especially RIFC. So here's what to expect heading into this one:

Last Time Out

RIFC fell 1-0 at FC Tulsa last Saturday. An early goal from Jeorgio Kocevski was all it would take for Tulsa to get the three points. RIFC looked a bit disjointed in attack, which is understandable given the change that they've undergone over the last few weeks.

Players to Watch

Karifa Yao (CB)

• Karifa was back on the bench last week after an extended injury absence. He didn't get into the game and we've seen injured players be named on the bench but go right back to the availability report before. However, I'm choosing to be optimistic and hope Karifa can see this field on Saturday. He brings a physicality to the baack line that has been missing while he's been out

Osman Foyo (FW)

• Osman has now made two appearances for RIFC off the bench after making his debut late against Monterey Bay and getting just over 30 minutes last weekend. I'm interested to see how he's utilized on Saturday. He found himself playing on the right late against Tulsa but his best position looks to be as a central striker

Stas Korzeniowski (FW)

• Stas arrived on loan from Philadelphia Union ahead of last weekend's game and he came off the bench with Osman in the second half. I think there's a decent chance he gets the start on Saturday. Stas has a similar profile to JJ Williams and could help the team return to the playing style they had with JJ

Storyline

Incorporating the New Guys

The main storyline with RIFC has been the same over the last few weeks. I feel like I'm writing about it in every blog. But it simply is what it is. The attack needs to adjust after selling JJ Williams to Heart of Midlothian. This will be the third game without JJ. Leo Afonso got the nod to start the first two games, with Osman Foyo and Stas Korzeniowski getting involved now that they're available.

After last week's game in Tulsa, I've come to the very early conclusion that Stas and Osman can't really start together. They came off the bench together in that game and I don't think it worked. My thought is that the team hopes Osman is the longer term successor to JJ while Stas is a short term solution (being that he's on loan). I wouldn't mind seeing Stas get the start with Osman either replacing him or coming on next to him late in the game if the team needs a goal. I'm ok with throwing on extra attackers for 10 minutes or so, even if they are similar players who want to take up the same positions. I just don't think they both start together but I'm happy to be proven wrong.

Last Time Out

Lou City drew 0-0 with Detroit last Saturday. While it wasn't a dominant performance or anything, Louisville did have the better chances and were the more likely team to come away with 3 points. Still, a draw feels like the right result.

If you look at Louisville's season as a whole, it's been disappointing for them so far. They're currently 5th in the Eastern Conference. While that's a solid spot to be in for most clubs, Lou City have higher expectations after having won the Player's Shield in each of the past two seasons. And as for their recent form, they've only won once in their last 5 league games (a 3-2 win at Orange County a few weeks ago).

Players to Watch

Ryan Schewe (GK)

• Schewe just arrived on loan from Sporting Kansas City of MLS. Louisville had signed Hugo Fauroux ahead of this season to be their starter but he got injured in that Orange County game and is out for the season. The announcement of the Schewe signing specifically said he was available for the selection this weekend so it's possible he gets the nod. If not, it would likely be Danny Faundez

Taylor Davila (MF)

• Davila has 7 assists this season, which leads his team and has him tied with 4 other players for most in the league. He's also second in the league in big chances created. Simply put, a lot of Lou City's attack goes through him. Slowing him down will be key

Jansen Wilson (MF/FW)

• Wilson lead his team in goals this season with 7, though he hasn't scored since August 1st against Tampa Bay. To be honest, there are a lot of attackers I could have pointed out here as Louisville have so much talent in their squad. They'll be hoping Wilson can get back to his best though after a dip in form over the past month

Storyline

Shore up the Defense

If you look at Lou City in 2024 and 2025, it's pretty clear why they were so successful in the regular season. They had a historically good attack to go with a slightly above average defense in 2024. Last year, their attack came back down to earth but the defense was incredible, conceding only 19 goals in 30 games.

This year, it's the defense that's the issue. Louisville have the fourth best attack in the league but are 21st in goals conceded. The clean sheet last weekend was their first since July 4th against Hartford. If Louisville could just improve a small amount defensively, they could be back on their way to bring a big threat come playoff time.

Prediction

RIFC 2-1 Louisville City FC

RIFC have been solid at home with 5-4-1 record. I think that'll continue on Saturday despite coming up against good opposition. With Louisville's potent attack, I'm not expecting a clean sheet. But I'm predicting a home debut goal for Stas and a Frank Nodarse goal from a set piece to give RIFC all three points.
