The Prematch Lookout: Sporting Club Jacksonville vs Rhode Island FC - 9/12/26

Rhode Island FC are back out on the road as they travel to the Sunshine State to take on Sporting Jax Saturday night. It will be the second meeting between the two sides after RIFC hosted Sporting Jax in their opener back in March. RIFC dominated that game in basically every stat except the one that matters most: goals. It ended in a 1-1 draw that has become increasingly more disappointing as the season has gone on. As for this game though, here's what to know:

Last Time Out

RIFC came away with a point at home last weekend against Louisville City. A debatable penalty (you can't convince me otherwise) gave Louisville a 1-0 lead that they'd take into halftime. Stas Korzeniowski would get an early second half equalizer for RIFC and the game would end 1-1. The performance was good enough to get three points so it left me a bit frustrated. Still, there were a lot of positives that the team can hopefully take on the road.

Players to Watch

Karifa Yao (CB)

• Karifa returned from injury and played the first half last week. He looked solid and hopefully will be able to go more minutes against a pretty good Sporting Jax attack

Yutaro Tsukada (FW)

• Yutaro also returned to action last week after missing the FC Tulsa game. I felt like he overcomplicated things a bit out on the wing but overall was still one of the team's most dangerous players. I expect him to have a big impact in Jacksonville

Stas Korzenciowski (FW)

• Stas was fantastic in his home debut. His physicality and hold up play was excellent. But even more impressive in my opinion was the attitude he played with. Stas brought such an edge out there and practically willed the team to get back into the game. We should see great things from him

Handle the Teams Below You

We like to hold the team to a high standard here at Tide Talk. Sometimes I think it can be a bit harsh. But one of the criticisms of the team that I think is perfectly valid is that they regularly under perform against teams that they should easily beat. You can look at Birmingham Legion this year who are 11th in the Eastern Conference and have 3 wins all season. 2 of those came against RIFC. Sporting Jax are bottom of the entire league with 14 points but got a draw in the opener at Centreville Bank Stadium earlier this year. This needs to be a game that RIFC win comfortably.

Last Time Out

Sporting Jax are coming off a thrilling 3-2 home win over Lexington last weekend. They went into halftime up 1-0 after a Kieran Sadlier goal in the 19th minute. Marcus Epps and Xavier Zengue scored for Lexington in the 73rd and 84th minutes respectively to give their side a 2-1 lead. But Emil Jaaskelainen tied it in the 88th and Ahmad Al-Qaq got the winner in stoppage time for Sporting Jax.

Players to Watch

Jake McGuire (GK)

• McGuire signed for Sporting Jax after having spent the last two seasons with North Carolina FC. He has started the last 8 games in goal, taking over for Christian Olivares. Olivares was on loan from St. Louis City of MLS and was the goalkeeper for the first few months of the season. It appears he lost the starting job to McGuire and was subsequently recalled by St. Louis last week

Kieran Sadlier (FW)

• Sadlier is a 31-year-old Irish winger who signed from English League One side Wycombe Wanderers. He had a lot of experience in League One as well as his native Ireland before coming stateside. Often running down the left wing, Sadlier regularly pops up in good areas and leads the team in goals with 10 so far this season

Emil Jaaskelainen (FW)

• The son of a long time Premer League goalkeeper, Emil is trying to make a himself over here in the States. He's second on the team in goals with 7 but is tied with Sadlier for goal contributions (11)

Storyline

Is There Any Defense???

As I mentioned earlier, Sporting Jax are the worst team in the league this season. And it's glaringly obvious as to what the problem is. It's the defense. The team is just inside the top half of the league in goals scored but are dead last having conceded 60 goals so far. That's 18 more than the next closest team. And if that doesn't make enough of a point, they're on virtually the same pace as the historically bad 2024 Miami FC team. That team ended up conceding 2.61 goals per game and Sporting Jax are at 2.60 right now. It should also come as no surprise that the only clean sheet the team has kept all year came against League One Sarasota Paradise in the USL Cup. So needless to say, Sporting Jax have to try to find a way to put up some sort of resistance defensively to have any chance on Saturday.

Prediction

Rhode Island FC 4-1 Sporting Club Jacksonville

At some point, RIFC has to get a dominant win over a bad team. I'm predicting it'll happen on Saturday. I do think Sadlier and Jaaskelainen will combine to create a goal for Sporting Jax but RIFC have too much in attack for that to matter. Stas will get a brace and Osman Foyo will score his first goal for the club. Jojea Kwizera will get the other one.
